Mermaid on Dolphin Scrimshaw Bone Box

This box is made of real ox bone tiles over a wood base, etched with a mermaid motif, and hand-polished to enhance the coloring.

Traditional scrimshaw art involved carving or etching motifs on bone or ivory and filling in the grooves with ink; it was often practiced by American sailors on long voyages during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Outside dimensions: 5-1/4" x 3-1/4" x 2"

Inside dimensions: 4-1/4” x 2-1/4” x 1-1/2”

Sealed with bone powder and epoxy, lacquer-coated and hand-polished.
