How does fossilization happen? When a dinosaur dies, its remains must be buried quickly by mud, sand, or volcanic ash before scavengers and weather can destroy the bones. Over millions of years, groundwater carrying dissolved minerals slowly seeps into the buried bones. Those minerals fill tiny pores and gradually replace much of the original organic material while preserving its microscopic structure. As the surrounding sediment hardens into rock, the fossilized bones become locked inside, where they may remain hidden until erosion or excavation brings them back to the surface.
