Species: Phareodus encaustus
Age: Eocene
Source: Green River, WY
Size: 11" x 8"
The plate measures 8" x 11" and the fish itself is 8" long. The fish, which is an uncommon genus, is in excellent condition and even has intact scales. The specimen was recovered from a layer prone to fracturing and has thus been professionally conserved onto a sturdy wood backing with the sides finished to resemble the natural stone. This is a beautiful museum-grade piece and a beautiful display.
The unusual chemical conditions at the bottom of Fossil Lake, part of the Green River formation, slowed bacterial decomposition, prevented scavengers from disturbing corpses, and suffocated creatures that ventured into the oxygen-starved aquatic layer. This resulted in a range of perfectly preserved animal remains, including a number of these incredibly well-preserved prehistoric fish.
Comes with a certificate of authenticity and a stand.
