Petrified Palm Root Pocket Stone

Age: Miocene (~20 Million years old)

Origin: Indonesia

Petrified roots form when dead plant roots are buried in wet sediments  saturated with dissolved minerals. In low-oxygen environments, minerals replace cell walls and fill void spaces in the wood. The vascular structure of the roots shows up as the  spots and patterns you see on each stone.
