Species: Phyllium pulchrifolium
Origin: Malaysia
Leaf insects have evolved some of the most remarkable camouflage in the animal kingdom. Not only do they look like leaves, but they behave much like leaves - down to their gait, which mimics the swaying of a leaf. Before death, a specimen has been observed to pass through the various hues of a decaying leaf, while their egg capsules resemble tree pods. This particular species has additionally evolved to repel predators by having uneven "edges", which creates the illusion of a leaf that has already been bitten and, presumably, spit out for not being tasty enough!
The insect is set in a unique antique-style gold-and-black oval frame over a black velvet background, and protected by real glass. The frame has both a hook for hanging and an easel stand in the back.
Frame size: 6" x 8" x 1.5"
